After gaining independence from the Spanish Empire in the early 1800s, Costa Rica has remained sovereign and progressive in many aspects of human development. They abolished their standing army in 1949 (one of very few sovereign nations to do so), is considered to be the “greenest and happiest” place on earth and a “BioGem” by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). This article sheds some light on their efforts, and have progressed since the article was written in 2012. Costa Rica now offers tax incentives for alternative energy producers and roughly 90% of its energy comes from renewable sources.

Massive amounts of deforestation had taken place in Central and South America post WWII. Partially an effort to keep up with an increasingly competitive global economy, and partially due to growing demand for cattle and farm lands. At one point Costa Rica had lost around 80% of its forest to clear cutting and large monoculture plantations. However, Costa Rica’s increasing efforts have paid off and they have become a shining example for the rest of Latin America. With permaculture and small scale farming becoming more popular, Costa Rica plans to be carbon neutral by 2021.

This offering is produced by ASOPROAAA certainly embodies the ideals of conservation and recovery. Founded in 1998, ASOPROAAA’s main goal was to organize and help Costa Rica’s infrastructure, agriculture and economy thrive. ASOPROAAA is made up of 1,142 families, 200 of which are involved with coffee and agroforestry. The cooperative provides milling and processing services to farmers, many do not have facilities of their own. ASOPROAAA helps them to focus on sustainable farming and promoting biodiversity. This particular cup comes from farmers in the Tarrazu Canton (a small political division within a country) of San Jose, and provides floral notes with some nicely balanced acidity.
